In the US, many adults historically mail Xmas cards to their pals and relations in December. Many service enterprises also send cards to their clients in this season, usually with a generally sufficient non-religious message like “happy holidays” or “seasons’s greetings.

The Historians say the custom of sending cards is started by to the traditional Chinese who exchanged messages of good will to celebrate the New Year. Egyptians in traditional times conveyed their greetings on papyrus scrolls. By the early 1400s, home made paper greetings cards were being exchanged in Europe. The Germans are known to have released New Year’s greetings from woodcuts as early as 1400, and home made paper Valentines were being exchanged in varied parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400s.

By the 1850s, the greeting card had been transformed from a comparatively costly, hand-crafted and hand-delivered present to a favored and affordable way of private communication. Thanks to new advances in printing and mechanization. This was followed by new trends like Xmas cards, the first of which appeared in broadcast form in London in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole employed artist John Calcott Horsley to design a vacation card that he could send to his chums and acquaintances. In the 1860s, firms like Marcus Ward & Company , Goodall and Charles Bennett began the mass production of greetings cards. They employed well-known artists like Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane as illustrators and card designers.

There are 2 major classes of greetings cards, one is mass produced (revealed on offset printing machines etc.) and other is home made cards. Hand painted cards is also a new category of cards. These cards are also available but this kind of cards can’t be mass- produced as each card must be individually painted. So each hand painted card is one of a kind.
